All I need now is a sheep

On Saturday Triskellian, B and G came over for a crafting date. B, G and I were all practicing spindling, while Tris was setting up her loom to weave a wrap from her handspun yarn (sadly, setting up took so long that she was unable to demonstrate weaving in practice). There was tea and orange drizzle cake and chat, and all in all a lovely afternoon was had by all.

I’m quite new to spinning, and I don’t practice nearly enough, but every time I do the results are a little better. My very first handspun bore a strong resemblance to a rope. My second attempt produced something a little better, certainly good enough to edge a hat with. And this weekend’s session produced this:

That picture was taken just before I dumped it in a sinkful of hot water to set the twist; it’s now dry and I’m wondering what to do with it. It’s 50g, more or less, and I’ve measured the skein and calculate that it’s probably about 32m, so a super-bulky weight (although in reality it’s very thick and thin). I don’t think there’s enough for a hat; there might be enough for a neckwarmer but I really don’t think it wants to be a neckwarmer. It’s probably too thick for a iPod cosy, and I don’t have an iPod anyway; I could try making a cosy for my tiny computer but (a) I suspect there won’t be quite enough and (b) I’m considering replacing the computer sometime this year with a slightly larger netbook.

Current thoughts are: use it as an edging (but for what?); some kind of small felted purse; or (a) flower corsage(s) (possibly felted). That last one is probably my favourite at the moment.

What would you do with 32m of lovely handspun?
