I wasn’t really feeling in the mood for something as bright as my red dress today, but somehow the only clean camisole I could find was the dark red one I wear under the red dress, so I didn’t have much choice. (Well, I probably did really, but 6:30am on a Monday while slightly discombobulated by the absence of the Today programme due to a strike is not a good time for bright ideas, so the red dress it was.)

Fortunately, although I started the day in a gloomy state of mind that really didn’t suit the red dress, the light box I asked work to order for me last week turned up mid-morning and within half an hour of switching it on my mood had really improved. Clearly I should have done this years ago, but I was always wary of spending the money on something I wasn’t sure would work, and the only time I can really use one is at work and it took things getting pretty horrendous for me to feel able to speak to my manager about depression; I was worried that if I did I’d just end up being seen as flaky and unreliable, or possibly whiny and demanding, but of course my manager was lovely and ordered the box straight away. I think I’m in love with it, it’s been so long since I felt this cheerful!
Even more cheerfully, it was lovely and sunny today, and when I left work at twenty past five it was actually still light. Maybe spring really isn’t far away…

The lack of the Today prog this morning totally threw me. I nearly didn’t get out of bed at all I was so confused about why there was a lengthy programme about the Pope on! Hooray for the lightbox – a previous manager used to have one and it always made her look lit up like a Christmas tree – I thought it was cool!
It’s probably a good thing that I don’t put the radio on until I get down to the kitchen, but it was very confusing and I really struggled to tell how I was doing for time!
The light box seems to have made a huge difference very quickly – hopefully that’ll carry on! In my last job I used to be ok with a desk lamp with a daylight bulb in, but I always managed to sit by a window there.
That’s such good news about the lightbox and well done for being brave enough to ask for it. Hopefully it will make a real difference on gloomy days as well as winter days.
I don’t normally start the day with the Today programme. I can’t be doing with people shouting at that time in the morning. But today I was driving to Cambridge and I did wonder why it wasn’t on. Didn’t know about the strike.
I think my SAD is more to do with the quantity of daylight available than the quality, but either way I hope this continues to help!
The Today programme can be annoying, but I find it less annoying than any other radio station at that time of the day, and when I’m moving from room to room I can’t really listen to anything but radio. Also, I find the time-checks essential for keeping me on track
Great news re the light box!
It is – I was really surprised how effective it seemed to be!
